Accutane is a powerful prescription medication used to treat severe acne that has not responded to other treatments. It contains isotretinoin, a form of vitamin A, which works by reducing the amount of oil produced by the skin's sebaceous glands.
Accutane works by reducing the size of the sebaceous (oil) glands in the skin, thus decreasing the production of sebum, which is a key contributor to acne. It also helps reduce inflammation and prevents new acne from forming.
Accutane is typically prescribed for patients with severe cystic acne, nodular acne, or acne that has not responded to other treatments such as topical medications or antibiotics.
Accutane treatment usually lasts around 6-18 months depending on several variables such as your weight, severity of acne, and micro-dosing vs regular dosing options. You may notice improvements in your skin as early as 4 weeks after starting the treatment. Regular follow-up appointments are necessary to monitor progress and manage potential side effects.
Some common side effects include dry skin, lips, and eyes, as well as joint pain. Rare side effects include mood changes and liver function issues. It's important to discuss potential risks with your healthcare provider before starting treatment.
Yes. It’s important to avoid pregnancy during treatment and for a period after stopping Accutane due to potential birth defects. You should also avoid sun exposure and use sunscreen to protect your skin, as Accutane can make it more sensitive.
No. Accutane can cause serious birth defects, and it’s important to avoid pregnancy while on this medication. Women of childbearing age will be required to use two forms of contraception during treatment.
Accutane is highly effective for most patients. Approximately 85% of people who complete a full course of treatment will experience long-lasting improvements or complete clearance of their acne. Some patients may require a second course of treatment.
After completing your course of Accutane, your skin may continue to improve for several months. Most people see long-lasting results, but occasional breakouts may occur. A follow-up consultation is often scheduled to evaluate progress and determine if further treatment is necessary.
To begin your Accutane journey, schedule a consultation with one of our specialists. We’ll assess your acne and discuss your medical history to determine if Accutane is right for you.
